Continual Professional Development

I believe that in all jobs, professions and vocations, you have to continually grow, challenge and stretch your skills to get the best out of your career and ultimately the best for your clients. Photography is no different and I'm always looking for the opportunity to enhance either my technical skill with the camera, my use of natural light, off camera flash, image processing or simply keeping current with popular trends.

Earlier in the season I had the chance to attend a fantastic workshop hosted by the Master Photographers Association, where myself and another 20 odd pro photographers spent a day covering the structure and content of a typical wedding day shoot. There was so much to enjoy about the day not to mention the chance to network with some outstanding fellow photographers.

A lot of the sessions were about what makes a strong image, some demonstrations around the use of off camera flash and also using video style LCD lighting as a light source and perhaps my favourite topic from the day, Fine Art style posing. It was fantastic and challenging, refining some of the simple posing techniques which can transform an image. It's interesting to note, well at least for me anyway the poses and angles of arms, hands, facial features and the body in general, that arguably work best in today’s photographs are no different from the poses as painted by the grand masters of renaissance art.

I didn't take many images but did capture the odd reference shot, where I liked the lighting being demonstrated or the angle or pose of the model. I have attached a few images to illustrate what I mean.

All in all it was a day very well spent!
